Nature vs Nurture

The concept of nature versus nature is a common idea argued in psychology when determining the influences of an individuals life choices including behaviours and interests. Nature focuses on the biological aspects; they are the inherited genetics and traits received from parents or ancestors. Nurture consists of all the influences on an individual since their time of conception. Nature, nurture, or a combination of both can explain most decisions in peoples lives.

The demographic this blog focuses on are teenagers. This generation of teenagers have grown up around the concept of modern technology, particularly the phone. This could be one of the reasons of why teens are so attached to their phones, it is because they do not fully know a life without one. Phones are an external stimuli and therefore actions surrounding the use of phones are caused by nurture.

The constant upgrades to phones, the want to get a new phone, the influence of media promoting new phones with more useful features and much more do promote more dependability on phones. Lots of these features are extremely beneficial, however, previous research done on the high dependence on these devices do argue that addiction is a large possibility. Previous research data shows how people get frantic, anxious or fidgety when not knowing where their phones are, and their focus once they temporarily misplace their phones is to find them. In a conducted anonymous survey, most people would not be able to leave their house without charged phones.

Information presented in previous blogs also mention conformity within peer groups as described in the cafeteria. This, again, is a source of nurture within societies that influences the behaviour of people around them. In this case, nurture plays a major role with the connections people have with their phones.
